Decreasing Wintertime Mixed?Layer Depth in the Northwestern North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

چکیده
The deep winter mixed layer (ML), ?240 m, in the northwestern North Pacific subtropical gyre exchanges heat and absorbs carbon dioxide from atmosphere, receives nutrients through Kuroshio. ML water spreads broadly subsurface ocean over gyre. Compiling historical temperature measurements, we show that depth (MLD) has decreased by ?6% last six decades. Observations, atmospheric reanalyzes, simulation outputs a one-dimensional turbulent closure model, climate projections reveal strengthening of upper-ocean stratification due to surface warming under global is responsible for MLD decrease. Climate models project further decrease attributable marked with warming, up 27%–40% 2100 highest emission scenario. A monitoring system should be established so important changes marine ecosystems can foreseen.

Microbiome of Trichodesmium Colonies from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
Filamentous diazotrophic Cyanobacteria of the genus Trichodesmium, often found in colonial form, provide an important source of new nitrogen to tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems. Colonies are composed of several clades of Trichodesmium in association with a diverse community of bacterial and eukaryotic epibionts. We used high-throughput 16S rRNA and nifH gene sequencing, carbon (C) and...
متن کاملUnveiling the cycle of dimethylsulfoniopropionate in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
A longstanding scientific enigma exists in oligotrophic subtropical waters: it appears that bacterial respiration contributes up to 90% of total community respiration even though the contribution of bacterial biomass to total biomass is much less. It has been suggested that experimental artifacts including pre-incubation filtration procedures, applied in order to separate bacteria from the rest...
متن کاملParticle distributions and dynamics in the euphotic zone of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
During the summer of 2012, we used laser diffractometry to investigate the temporal and vertical variability of the particle size spectrum (1.25–100 mm in equivalent diameter) in the euphotic zone of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Particles measured with this optical method accounted for;40% of the particulate carbon stocks (<202 mm) in the upper euphotic zone (25–75 m), as estimated using...
متن کاملPhenology of particle size distributions and primary productivity in the North Pacific subtropical gyre (Station ALOHA)
The particle size distribution (PSD) is a critical aspect of the oceanic ecosystem. Local variability in the PSD can be indicative of shifts in microbial community structure and reveal patterns in cell growth and loss. The PSD also plays a central role in particle export by influencing settling speed. Satellite-based models of primary productivity (PP) often rely on aspects of photophysiology t...
متن کاملInterannual variability of primary production and dissolved organic nitrogen storage in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
[1] The upper ocean primary production measurements from the Hawaii Ocean Time series (HOT) at Station ALOHA in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre showed substantial variability over the last two decades. The annual average primary production varied within a limited range over 1991–1998, significantly increased in 1999–2000 and then gradually decreased afterwards. This variability was investiga...
